Eyelid Surgery / Brow Lift

Your eyes are a central feature of your face, and so, one of the first things people notice about you. But as the soft tissues that hold your eyelids and eyebrows descend with age, your eyes can make you look tired, angry or sad when you are anything but. Luckily, there are ways to address these problems, and that is with eyelid surgery and brow lift surgery.

At Chattahoochee Plastic Surgery, our surgeons often combine eyelid surgery with a brow lift for the most comprehensive results. We believe that the combination of these two techniques yields outstanding rejuvenation to the upper face that is not possible with just one or the other technique.

What Is Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery, also called blepharoplasty, is surgery to rejuvenate the eyes. Aging causes eyelids to droop, the skin around them to thin and the soft tissues underneath to bulge. In some cases, the muscles that control the eyelids weaken, also contributing to drooping. Eyelid surgery can help address all of these problems quickly and permanently. It is also able to address functional problems.

Eyelid surgery can be performed on the upper eyelids, the lower eyelids or both together. During upper eyelid surgery, the surgeon makes an incision in the crease of the eyelid to remove excess skin and fat. The remaining tissues are tightened and repositioned to prevent a hollowed-out appearance. The scar from this procedure is well hidden within the eyelid crease.

During lower eyelid surgery, the surgeon makes an incision below your lash line or along the eyelid mucosa to remove or reposition underlying fat. This creates a smoother lower eyelid. They may also tighten the lower eyelid by anchoring its outer edge.

What Is a Brow Lift?

A brow lift is a procedure that lifts the brows and smoothens the forehead.

A brow lift corrects sagging and drooping of the eyebrows while improving the appearance of the forehead, which is why it is also known as a forehead lift. A brow lift is often combined with eyelid surgery to offer complete upper face rejuvenation. Because aging of the upper face affects more than the small area of the eyes, many patients seeking blepharoplasty are also candidates for a brow lift.

A brow lift can be done using various techniques. The procedure is typically performed by making incisions in your hair-bearing scalp, but sometimes incisions are made in the forehead or upper eyelids. A modern approach is the endoscopic brow lift, in which the surgeon uses an endoscope to reposition forehead tissue.

Who Is A Good Candidate for Eyelid Surgery and Brow Lift?

Anyone who is concerned about upper facial aging and in relatively good health can be a candidate for eyelid surgery and/or a brow lift. If you have any of the following cosmetic issues, you may want to consider these procedures:

  • Sagging and puffy eyelids that make you look older
  • Droopy eyelids that obstruct your vision or cause skin irritation
  • A shortened distance between the brows and eyelids
  • Prominent horizontal wrinkling of the forehead

Patients with dry eyes and other eye problems may not be suitable candidates for these procedures. If you have a clotting disorder or an illness that interferes with wound healing, we may recommend a less invasive alternative, like Botox injections and dermal fillers.

Eyelid Surgery and Brow Lift Process

These are surgical procedures, so there is some level of preparation and downtime involved. Here is what you can expect when getting eyelid surgery or a brow lift at Chattahoochee Plastic Surgery.

Preparation

We will begin by scheduling your consultation with one of our surgeons. During your first consultation, the surgeon will take a careful look at your eye and brow area and talk to you about your expectations. They will review your medical history to see if you are a candidate and determine which approach will work for you.

In the week leading up to surgery, you should discontinue blood-thinning drugs and supplements. We also advise patients to quit smoking and avoid alcohol a month before their procedure, as both interfere with healing. If you are taking antiplatelet and anticoagulant medication, you will need to contact your doctor about safely discontinuing these medications a week before surgery.

Because you will be given anesthesia for your procedure, it is important to arrange for someone to drive you back home. You will need to take a week or two off from work and social activities.

Treatment

Before treatment, your surgeon will mark areas as guidance. You will then be given local anesthesia with sedation or, if necessary, placed under general anesthesia.

Your surgeon will perform one or more techniques to remove excess skin and fat or to reposition the skin, fat and muscle to create a youthful eyelid and brow. Our surgeons aim to preserve as much tissue as possible during these procedures, as this approach yields more favorable results. The procedure should take one to three hours to complete.

Recovery and Results

You will be discharged from the hospital on the day of your treatment and start your recovery process at home. The treatment area will be swollen, slightly bruised and sore. It can take one to four weeks for the swelling and bruising to subside. Keeping your head elevated and applying a cold compress can reduce swelling.

Your surgeon will stay in touch with you during the recovery process. You will need to come back for a follow-up appointment after seven to 10 days to have your stitches removed. Your results will show in two weeks and be finalized in six months when the tissue has completely healed.

When full healing is reached, your eye creases will look more proportioned, your under-eye area smoother, your brows naturally lifted and your forehead lines will be less noticeable. The results will last you for years, if not your lifetime.
