Chin Augmentation

Your chin plays a big part in the balance and harmony of your facial features. Ideally, your chin should be proportionate and aligned with your nose and lips. A weak or misaligned chin, on the other hand, can create aesthetic disharmony, making your nose look large or your upper lip appear protruding.

These concerns can be addressed with chin augmentation. Also known as genioplasty or mentoplasty, chin augmentation is a surgical procedure performed to improve the contours of the chin area by using implants. Chin augmentation can be performed alone or in conjunction with a rhinoplasty to enhance facial proportions.

What Is Chin Augmentation?

Chin augmentation is surgery to correct a weak or asymmetrical chin. This is usually accomplished by placing an implant directly over the jaw bone where the chin is located. The goal of chin augmentation is to create a more proportionate and appealing jawline that is in harmony with other facial features.

Two types of implants that we use in chin augmentation are smooth silicone implants and porous polyethylene implants. These are easy to secure to the jaw bone and are biologically inert materials — meaning they are unlikely to cause irritation when placed in the body.

Chin augmentation is usually performed to build up a weak or narrow chin. It is often performed alongside rhinoplasty to ensure a harmonious nose-to-chin balance. Up to 25% of rhinoplasty patients are candidates for chin augmentation.

Who Is a Candidate for Chin Augmentation?

Nearly anyone concerned about a weak chin can be a candidate for chin augmentation with implants.

A weak chin, also referred to as a recessed chin, is small in comparison to other facial features and may appear to slope backward on the face. Such a chin often creates a convex facial profile and can even make the nose appear larger than it is.

If you have severe teeth misalignment or a severely recessed chin, or if you are allergic to implant materials, you may not be the best candidate for this procedure. In this case, we can recommend alternatives.

The Chin Augmentation Process

Chin augmentation is a popular procedure with a high success rate. As a surgical procedure, there is some preparation and downtime involved. Here is what to expect with your chin augmentation procedure.

Preparation

Your surgeon will first perform a comprehensive evaluation of your chin, which will include a photographic analysis. They will explain the procedure to you and work with you to help you determine your ideal implant size.

In the weeks before your surgery, you may need to have a medical evaluation and lab testing to confirm that you are healthy enough for surgery. You will be advised to discontinue blood-thinning medications and supplements and cease smoking. If you are undergoing general anesthesia, you should not eat after midnight the night before your procedure. You will likely need to take time off work and have someone to drive you back home.

Surgery

Surgery will be performed at the Brookstone Ambulatory Surgery Center (BASC), which is our state-of-the-art facility designed for outpatient procedures.

  • We will start by giving you general anesthesia, intravenous sedation or local anesthesia.
  • Your surgeon will then make a small incision inside the mouth or under your chin.
  • They will create a pocket underneath the chin muscle for implant placement.
  • The implant will be secured to the jawbone with screws or stitches.
  • Your surgeon will close the incision with sutures and cover it with non-adhesive gauze.

The procedure takes between one and three hours.

Recovery & Results

Chin augmentation is an outpatient procedure, so you should be able to go home as soon as you recover from the anesthesia, about 30 – 45 minutes. You will need someone drive you back home and stay with you for the first 24 hours.

Your chin will feel sore and look swollen and bruised immediately after surgery, and likely for a few weeks after. If the incision was made underneath the chin, sutures will be removed four to seven days post-op. Most swelling will be gone by six weeks, and it can take up to three months for the final results to show.

Chin augmentation can produce a remarkable difference in the degree of protrusion and the angle of the chin, as well as an overall improved balance of facial features.

Combining Chin Augmentation With Other Procedures

Many of our patients see a remarkable improvement in their facial harmony from chin augmentation alone. However, chin augmentation can be combined with other procedures where necessary:

  • Rhinoplasty to change the size or shape of the nose
  • Neck liposuction to slim the appearance of the new chin and neck area
  • Fat transfer to the cheeks to add more fullness to the mid-face

During your consultation, Dr. Naman will discuss your preferences and options to help you meet your aesthetic goals.

“The staff is very efficient and knowledgeable. They were very helpful in getting me prepared for my upcoming procedure. The nurse explained to me the information that I needed to do, such as what meds I had to stop taking before my procedure and the time and place of my surgery. That covered all the bases.” – Eloise S.

Frequently Asked Questions Frequently Asked Questions

Is chin augmentation risky?

Chin augmentation is overall a safe procedure. However, like any surgery, it does carry some level of risk. Rare complications of chin implants include uncontrolled bleeding, bruising, infection, changes in sensation and problems with the implant itself.

Is there anything I should avoid after chin augmentation?

To ensure proper healing of the incision, avoid using harsh cosmetics, hot baths and direct sun exposure in the days to weeks following surgery. Also, try to sleep on your back as much as possible until your stitches come out.

Will my results seem obvious?

Our two board-certified surgeons have extensive training and experience in creating natural-looking results that match every patient’s unique features. When deciding on the size and position of the implant, we take your entire facial anatomy into account to create seamless results.

Are chin implants permanent?

Unlike some other medical devices, chin implants do not need to be replaced. After your surgery, you can enjoy your results indefinitely.

Will my chin augmentation change the appearance of my neck?

A chin augmentation can add subtle changes to your overall appearance and that includes your neck. Your neck may appear slimmer and well-defined as a result.

Are there any alternatives to chin augmentation?

For patients who are not candidates for chin augmentation, dermal fillers offer a nonsurgical alternative. However, most dermal fillers are not permanent and only work to create a subtle difference.
