Microdermabrasion

Years of sun exposure and the effects of aging can cause significant damage to your skin. This damage often shows itself as fine lines and wrinkles, dark spots, enlarged pores and a dull-looking complexion. A noninvasive treatment called microdermabrasion can reverse many of these changes quickly and with no downtime.

Microdermabrasion is one of the most popular exfoliation treatments offered at our The Spa at Chattahoochee Plastic Surgery. Many of our patients seek this treatment because it is less aggressive than chemical peels and dermabrasion. The results are also long-lasting and visible after one treatment.

What Is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a skin rejuvenation technique. It uses a special applicator to sand away the top layer of your skin and promote skin renewal. The result is healthier and younger-looking skin.

There are two types of microdermabrasion treatments: crystal microdermabrasion and diamond microdermabrasion. At Chattahoochee Plastic Surgery, we prefer using tried-and-true crystal microdermabrasion for our clients. With this technique, the wand applicator sprays fine crystals onto the skin, which rub away dead and damaged skin cells. The device’s vacuum system simultaneously suctions the crystals and damaged cells.

You can think of microdermabrasion as gentle sandpapering of the top layer of the skin or more controlled exfoliation of the skin. This helps remove superficial damage on the skin and promotes skin renewal as the skin starts to heal.

What Does Microdermabrasion Treat?

Microdermabrasion treats superficial skin damage caused by years of sun exposure and aging. Some of the skin concerns this treatment can address include:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Uneven skin tone and texture
  • Sun spots and age spots
  • Melasma
  • Enlarged pores
  • Acne and acne scars
  • A dull complexion

Microdermabrasion vs. Dermabrasion

Dermabrasion and microdermabrasion both work by “sanding” the skin. However, microdermabrasion is much gentler compared to dermabrasion, offering no downtime but subtler results. This is why we usually recommend dermabrasion to patients with more prominent signs of aging and who can afford a downtime period of three to four weeks.

During dermabrasion, your provider first cleanses and numbs the skin. They then use a high-speed rotary instrument with an abrasive surface to scrape away the top layers of the skin. There is usually some bleeding and redness involved immediately after treatment.

Microdermabrasion vs. Chemical Peels

Many of our patients wonder whether to choose chemical peels or microdermabrasion. Microdermabrasion removes just the stratum corneum layer of the epidermis, which is the topmost layer of your skin composed of dead skin cells.

Chemical peels, on the other hand, can remove the epidermis and even reach the dermis. By dissolving dead and damaged skin cells, chemical peels promote collagen production deep within the skin and yield dramatic improvement as a result. However, downtime is necessary while the skin heals.

The Microdermabrasion Process

Microdermabrasion requires no anesthesia and the treatment is complete in less than an hour.

Preparation

Microdermabrasion starts with an initial consultation, which can be carried out over the phone or in person. This is the right time to discuss your concerns and goals with your provider to determine if this is a suitable treatment for you.

In the week leading up to your treatment, it is a good idea to avoid these things:

  • Direct sun exposure
  • Tanning beds and creams
  • Waxing the treatment area
  • Exfoliating treatments

Treatment

You will first need to remove any makeup and cleanse your face. There is no need for numbing creams as this treatment is painless. You will then rest in a reclined position, and your provider will glide a hand-held wand across your skin, focusing on problem areas.

The whole treatment takes about 30 minutes to an hour. Once treatment is complete, your provider will apply a moisturizer and sunscreen.

Recovery & Results

Your skin will be smooth and visibly improved immediately after treatment. However, minor redness, swelling, bruising and tenderness are normal. These side effects should subside within the first week.

There is no downtime with this treatment, so feel free to resume your usual activities. But do take good care of your skin by using gentle cleansers, moisturizing daily and using sunscreen. This will ensure the healing process goes smoothly and prevents complications. Your skin may be prone to dryness and flaking during the recovery period, which lasts a week at the most.

While many patients see improvement after a single treatment, most of our patients require multiple sessions to achieve desired results. The number of sessions required depends on your expectations and the severity of your concerns.

“….I am very pleased with the results. You walk in as a Patient and leave a Friend who is valued and appreciated. Dr. Naman is tops in every way. I also recommend the SPA.”
