Body Lift

Loose, excess skin can feel like a cloak draped over your body, hiding and distorting your true contours. This is especially common after achieving considerable weight loss, but can also occur due to other factors such as pregnancy, aging or sun damage. If you’re bothered by sagging tissues that won’t seem to “snap back” into place after a dramatic change, a body lift can restore a more sculpted, defined appearance that enhances your natural curves.

At Chattahoochee Plastic Surgery, our experienced and board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Naman, is dedicated to providing patients with transformative solutions that help them feel more comfortable and confident in their own bodies. What Is a Body Lift?

Excess skin that hangs from the body can leave you with an unflattering figure and significantly impact your self-esteem. A body lift is a surgical procedure designed to lift, reshape and tighten sagging tissues to help you achieve a firmer, more sculpted appearance. It is often used to eliminate the loose skin that remains after massive weight loss, pregnancy or aging to restore your body’s natural contours, particularly in areas such as the abdomen, buttocks, thighs and arms. A body lift can be customized to your needs and is a game-changer when it comes to putting the final touches on your weight loss journey.

What Can a Body Lift Treat?

A body lift can be performed on both the upper and lower torso for comprehensive rejuvenation of your physique. Common treatment areas include the hips, waist, thighs, buttocks and abdomen, but it can also eliminate loose skin from the arms, chest and back. If you experience the following concerns, this procedure may be right for you:

  • Loose, excess skin caused by pregnancy, weight loss or aging
  • Poor definition due to loose body tissues
  • Folds of stretched skin that cause discomfort and rashes
  • A loss of skin elasticity and firmness
  • Difficulty finding clothing that fits properly due to hanging skin or tissues

Some patients undergo a body lift to improve their contours after significant weight loss, while others are looking to tighten loose tissues that develop as a result of aging, sun damage or pregnancy. No matter where or why you have sagging skin, this procedure can lift, reshape and tighten your areas of concern. During your initial consultation, our experienced plastic surgeons will develop a personalized treatment plan to address your exact concerns and restore a firmer, more toned body shape that looks youthful, balanced and proportionate.

Body Lift Options

A body lift combines multiple surgeries to address your specific needs and goals. Your procedure may involve a lower body lift, upper body lift or both, as well as a thigh lift, arm lift or buttock lift to address specific concerns in these areas. A body lift can also incorporate a breast lift, male breast reduction or liposuction for the most balanced, well-rounded results.

At Chattahoochee Plastic Surgery, we offer various body lift options to ensure a personalized procedure that’s been designed just for you. Regardless of where you want to improve your contours, there is plenty of room for customization to help you achieve your desired outcome.

Lower Body Lift

A popular choice for enhancing the contours below the waist, a lower body lift focuses on eliminating excess skin and fat from the midsection, hips, buttocks and thighs. It typically involves making a circumferential incision that encircles the abdomen, waist and back. In some cases, additional incisions may be made in the hips and buttocks. Through these incisions, our surgeons will carefully remove sagging skin and tighten the underlying tissues to create more aesthetically pleasing body contours that enhance your figure.

Upper Body Lift

The upper body lift targets areas such as the upper arms, breasts and back. This procedure may also incorporate procedures like a breast lift or male breast reduction to ensure a more youthful and balanced appearance. Similar to a lower body lift, an upper body lift eliminates excess skin and tissue from the targeted areas. Combining an upper body lift with a lower body lift can yield an even more dramatic transformation, providing comprehensive results that address multiple concerns at once to sculpt well-proportioned contours.

Post-Bariatric Body Lift

Designed specifically for individuals who have experienced significant weight loss, a post-bariatric body lift targets the concerns caused by loose, stretched skin that fails to regain its natural elasticity. This procedure is commonly performed after gastric bypass surgery or other weight loss interventions to sculpt smoother, firmer contours. Depending on your particular goals and needs, a post-bariatric body lift may involve a series of surgeries on the upper and lower torso to ensure optimal results and allow time for adequate healing.

Ideal Candidates for a Body Lift

While a body lift can be a transformative experience, there are some important factors to consider when deciding if this procedure is right for you. For example, it is generally recommended that you first reach and maintain a stable, healthy weight to ensure an optimal outcome. If you’ve recently undergone bariatric surgery, you should plan on waiting for a minimum of 12 to 18 months before planning or scheduling your body lift surgery.

Ideal candidates should also be in good overall health, have reasonable expectations about what a body lift can achieve and be committed to maintaining a healthy lifestyle after surgery. During your consultation with our plastic surgeons, we will thoroughly evaluate your needs, concerns and goals to help determine if this procedure is a suitable treatment option.

What to Expect During Your Body Lift

A body lift can dramatically transform your physique and help you achieve the lean, sculpted figure you’ve always wanted. Your journey begins with a phone call to our office, where we will set up an in-person consultation to better understand your needs and goals. We will also use this time to evaluate your candidacy and develop your personalized treatment plan.

On the day of your body lift, your well-being and safety is our top priority. When you arrive at the surgical center, we’ll review the details of your procedure and answer any last-minute questions or concerns you may have before proceeding. Then, anesthesia will be administered to keep you comfortable during surgery. General anesthesia is often used, but local anesthesia with sedation may be an option depending on your needs and preferences.

A body lift is performed by removing loose skin and tissue in targeted areas. To achieve this, a circumferential incision is made in a bikini pattern along the inner thigh that extends up to and around the waistline. Additional incisions may be placed in the arms or the crease of the buttocks, depending on the specific concerns being addressed. Through these incisions, excess skin and fat are meticulously removed to sculpt firmer contours. The underlying tissues are also tightened and reshaped before the skin is pulled taut and sutured into place.

After your body lift is complete, you’ll be free to return home and begin the recovery process. This is an outpatient procedure and typically doesn’t require an overnight hospital stay. However, you will need someone to take you home and look after you for the first 24 hours, as the effects of anesthesia can linger, making you groggy and impairing your ability to drive.

Body Lift Recovery

After your body lift procedure, it’s essential to prioritize your recovery to ensure optimal healing and long-lasting results. Here’s what you can anticipate during this crucial phase:

  • Initial Discomfort — You can expect to experience some discomfort, swelling and bruising in the treated areas. These side effects should subside over the following weeks as your body recovers, but swelling may take longer to diminish fully.
    • Medication may be prescribed to help manage pain.
  • Activity Restrictions — For the first few weeks, you’ll be advised to get plenty of rest and avoid strenuous activities or heavy lifting to allow your body to heal properly. Gradually, you can resume light activities as recommended by your surgeon.
    • Trying to do too much too soon can set back your recovery.
  • Post-Operative Care — We will provide detailed instructions on how to care for your incisions, dressings and surgical drains, if applicable. It’s important to follow these guidelines for a smooth recovery and to minimize your risk of complications.
    • Compression garments should be worn to ensure optimal results.
  • Recovery Timeline — The recovery timeline can vary from person to person, depending on the scope and extent of surgery. However, most patients can expect to resume work and daily activities within a few weeks. It’s important to note that complete healing and the full realization of your results will take several months.
    • A follow-up appointment will be scheduled to check on your progress.

At each step of your recovery, our dedicated team will be by your side and available to address any questions or concerns you might have. Our goal is to ensure your complete comfort, safety and satisfaction. We know that this transformative experience is unique to you and are committed to providing you with the level of care and support you deserve.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Long Does a Body Lift Take?

The duration of your body lift can vary depending on the extent of your surgery, the size and scope of the areas being treated, and whether it is combined with other procedures. On average, surgery typically takes between three to six hours to complete.

What Causes Loose, Sagging Skin?

There are many things that may cause your body to sag. Some of these include aging, sun damage, pregnancy, a significant increase or decrease in weight, and even genetics. Regardless of the reason, excess skin can’t be eliminated through diet and exercise, although strength training can help build muscle to improve its appearance to some degree. In many cases, surgery is needed to remove loose tissue and restore your natural body contours.

Will There Be Visible Scarring After a Body Lift?

While incisions are necessary during your body lift to eliminate loose skin, our skilled plastic surgeons make every effort to reduce scarring. Incisions are placed in strategic locations to minimize visibility, and scars will become less noticeable over time. We’ll also provide you with detailed instructions for caring for your incisions. Most patients are satisfied with their results and feel the risk of scarring is a worthwhile trade-off for improved body contours.

Are the Results of a Body Lift Permanent?

The results of a body lift are long-lasting, so you can expect to enjoy a firmer, more youthful physique for years or even decades. However, it’s important to maintain a healthy lifestyle and avoid weight fluctuations after surgery, as gaining weight can re-stretch the skin and negatively impact the outcome of your procedure. Pregnancy can have a similar effect, so it’s often recommended to wait until you’re finished having children to undergo a body lift.

How Much Skin Does a Body Lift Remove?

The amount of skin removed during a body lift procedure can vary depending on individual factors and your desired results. On average, a body lift can eliminate about six to 10 pounds of excess skin, but patients with a larger amount of sagging skin from substantial weight loss may see up to 20 pounds removed. The exact amount of skin removal will be determined during your consultation. It’s important to remember that a body lift is not a weight loss procedure, but rather serves as the final touch once you’ve reached your weight goals.

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
