Breast Reduction

Your breasts are a defining feature of your shapely figure. But for some women, they’re too large or heavy for their frame, with the weight and size becoming a constant source of discomfort. A breast reduction can address this problem and give you a lighter, more balanced chest by removing the excess skin, fat and tissue that weighs your breasts down. Women of all ages choose breast reduction surgery for cosmetic or medical reasons and enjoy long-lasting results that improve not just their confidence but their overall quality of life.

At Chattahoochee Plastic Surgery, we know how overly large breasts can lead to physical and emotional distress. Our goal is to help you live a full and active life without the discomfort and self-consciousness that may have been holding you back before. Our board-certified surgeons and entire staff will work hard to give you the results that you are looking for.

We’re always happy to answer any questions. If you are interested in learning more about breast reduction surgery or would like to schedule a consultation, contact us today at (706) 494-7700.

What Is Breast Reduction?

Breast reduction, also known as reduction mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure performed for both cosmetic and medical reasons that makes the breasts lighter and smaller by removing excess skin, fat and glandular tissue. For some women, the breasts are disproportionately large for their body type or frame size and cause issues like pain, discomfort or emotional distress that make certain activities difficult. Breast reduction can alleviate these symptoms while improving the overall appearance of the breasts.

Breast reduction can also be done to reverse the unwanted effects of pregnancy, aging or weight loss. If you’re unhappy with your breasts because they are too large, disproportionate to your body type or cause you discomfort, you might be a good candidate for a breast reduction surgery regardless of their size. Dr. Naman at Chattahoochee Plastic Surgery can help you determine if breast reduction is right for you with an initial consultation to review your symptoms and discuss your concerns, needs and goals.

Is Breast Reduction Right for Me?

Breast reduction surgery is an effective procedure for addressing a range of concerns associated with disproportionately large breasts. If you experience some of the following, your doctor may recommend breast reduction to alleviate your symptoms. A breast reduction can also be performed for cosmetic reasons to improve your overall self-esteem.

  • Physical Discomfort: If you experience chronic neck, back and/or shoulder pain caused by the weight of your breasts, breast reduction can provide relief by reducing their size and weight and redistributing the tissue more evenly.
  • Skin Irritation & Rashes: Excessively large breasts often create friction and sweating, leading to skin irritations, rashes and infections. Breast reduction helps alleviate these issues and improves skin health by reducing breast size.
  • Posture Problems: Heavy breasts can cause poor posture and lead to a slouched or hunched appearance. Breast reduction helps restore balance to your body, allowing for improved posture and a more confident stance.
  • Physical Activity Limitations: Engaging in physical activities, such as running or certain sports, can be challenging and uncomfortable for women with large breasts. Breast reduction can enhance your freedom of movement, allowing you to participate in activities you love without hindrance.
  • Self-Esteem & Body Image Issues: Overly large breasts can have a significant impact on your self-confidence and body image. Breast reduction not only provides physical relief but also improves your emotional well-being, helping you feel more comfortable and confident in your own skin.

Over time, many of these problems can get worse. Physical therapy, weight loss and pain medication can help to a certain extent, but reducing the size of the breasts is the only way to alleviate your symptoms completely. By doing so, breast reduction empowers you to lead a more active and fulfilling lifestyle while boosting your comfort and self-esteem.

About Your Breast Reduction Procedure

Your Initial Consultation

Your breast reduction at Chattahoochee Plastic Surgery begins with a consultation with our board-certified plastic surgeons. Our team is dedicated to providing personalized care and understanding your unique needs, so we will thoroughly discuss your needs, review your medical history and evaluate the size and shape of your breasts during this initial consultation. We’ll also explain the surgery in a friendly and compassionate manner, addressing any questions or concerns you may have along the way so you can make an informed decision.

Breast Reduction Surgery

After your initial consultation, we will collect the necessary insurance information, develop a personalized treatment plan tailored to your specific requirements and schedule a date for your surgery. Your breast reduction will take place at our state-licensed outpatient surgical facility, the hospital or another surgery center, depending on your unique circumstances.

On the day of your procedure, you’ll arrive at the surgical facility and meet with your surgical team. Breast reduction is performed under general anesthesia and takes two to three hours to complete. Your plastic surgeon will make incisions that allow for excess breast skin, fat and glandular tissue to be removed, reducing the overall volume of your breasts. This is done carefully and with precision to minimize scarring and ensure symmetrical results.

Once the desired breast size is reached, the incisions will be closed, and dressings may be applied. Then, you’ll be brought to the recovery room to wait for the anesthesia to wear off. During this time, you will also be closely monitored for any concerns or complications.

Recovery & Results

Initially after your surgery, you’ll experience a certain amount of pain, discomfort and swelling in the breasts that will gradually subside. The breasts may also temporarily feel less sensitive, particularly around the nipples and areola. Pain medication and supportive compression garments can help manage these symptoms and keep you comfortable, but you should also plan on avoiding strenuous exercise and getting plenty of rest for a few days. Most women can resume work and other light activities in about a week, depending on how well their body is healing. Our surgeons will provide detailed aftercare instructions to ensure a smooth recovery and schedule follow-up appointments to check on your progress.

Breast reduction has one of the best satisfaction rates among patients who undergo the procedure. Pain associated with overly large breasts is completely eliminated and your body will be better proportioned, enhancing your appearance. While reduced breast size is noticeable immediately after your surgery, your results will continue to develop further as swelling decreases and the breasts settle into their new size and shape.

Your results will be long-lasting, with most patients enjoying a permanent reduction in their breast size. However, pregnancy or weight gain can enlarge the breasts after surgery, so it’s recommended to maintain a healthy lifestyle and undergo breast reduction after you’re done having children. Women that do decide to become pregnant after their breast reduction still retain some of their results and report that the breasts return to a manageable size.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Breast Reduction Covered by Health Insurance?

If your breasts cause symptoms like pain, discomfort or chafing, your health insurance may cover part or all of the cost of your surgery. However, you may first need to meet certain criteria, receive prior authorization or establish a treatment history to have the procedure deemed medically necessary. Once deemed medically necessary, many health insurance plans will cover the cost of a breast reduction. During your consultation, you’ll be able to speak with our friendly receptionist, who will work with your insurance provider and help you navigate the process as much as possible. If you’d like to use insurance, you will be able to schedule your surgery after we obtain the information from the insurance company.

Does Breast Reduction Cause a Loss of Breast Sensation?

It is possible to experience temporary changes in nipple or breast sensation after your breast reduction surgery. However, in most cases, sensation returns gradually as the healing process progresses. It’s important to discuss any concerns you have about breast sensation with your surgical team during your initial consultation and follow-up appointments.

Will I Be Able to Breastfeed After My Breast Reduction?

Most women are still able to breastfeed after a breast reduction. However, milk supply may be reduced or negatively impacted, as the procedure involves removing excess breast tissue. If you’re considering breast reduction surgery and have concerns about breastfeeding, make sure to discuss this before surgery during your initial consultation. Depending on your goals and priorities, the surgical technique used to reduce your breast size may change.

Is There Scarring After Breast Reduction Surgery?

Breast reduction does result in some scars; however, their visibility can vary depending on factors such as incision placement, healing ability and scar management practices. Our skilled plastic surgeons make incisions in discreet, strategic locations to minimize the appearance of scars. Over time, the scars generally fade and become less noticeable.

Are There Risks Associated With Breast Reduction?

Like any surgical procedure, breast reduction carries some risks. This can include infection, bleeding, changes in breast or nipple sensation, scarring, asymmetry and rare complications such as poor wound healing or blood clots. We will discuss the potential risks during your initial consultation and provide guidance on how to ensure the best possible outcome.

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
