Chin Liposuction

Eliminate a Double Chin and Define Your Jawline

Do you feel self-conscious about the rounded shape of your chin and jawline? Does excess fat beneath your chin make you look heavier than you are? Do you find yourself constantly adjusting your posture or lifting and extending your chin to prevent your “double chin” from showing in photos?

If you’re unhappy with the fullness of your chin and the area beneath it, you’re not alone. Many people struggle with excess fat in this area, which can be challenging to address with diet and exercise. Fortunately, chin liposuction is a safe and effective solution to help you achieve the defined chin and jawline you deserve.

What Is Chin Liposuction?

Chin liposuction (sometimes called “chin lipo”) is a cosmetic procedure that removes unwanted fat from the chin and neck area. The goal of this procedure is to reduce submental fat and contour the chin and jawline to achieve a more slender, defined lower facial profile.

Chin Liposuction Can Improve the Following:

  • A double chin
  • A soft, rounded jawline
  • The overall harmony of the lower face, submental area and neck

Am I a Good Candidate for Chin Liposuction?

Candidates for chin liposuction are generally in good overall health and have realistic expectations for the procedure.

Ideal Chin Liposuction Candidates:

  • Are at or near their ideal body weight
  • Have excess fat in the chin and neck area that has not responded to diet and exercise
  • Have good skin elasticity under their chin, which will allow the skin to contract after the fat is removed
  • Do not smoke or are willing to quit for several weeks

It’s important to note that chin liposuction is not a weight loss procedure. It is best suited for individuals at or near their ideal body weight who struggle with unwanted fat in the chin and neck area. Chin liposuction is also not a solution for excess skin or muscle laxity in the neck area. If you have significant skin or muscle sagging, you may want to combine a procedure like facelift surgery with your chin liposuction to address those issues. Patients with a history of neck or thyroid problems may not be good candidates for chin liposuction.

At your personalized consultation, one of our board-certified plastic surgeons will review all of these considerations and more to determine whether you are a good candidate for chin liposuction.

Preparing for Chin Liposuction

In the weeks leading up to your chin liposuction procedure, it’s essential to follow your surgeon’s pre-operative instructions carefully. These may include:

  • Avoiding certain medications and supplements that can increase the risk of bleeding
  • Staying hydrated and eating a nutritious, balanced diet
  • Avoiding prolonged sun exposure
  • Quitting smoking at least two weeks before your procedure
  • Avoiding alcohol for at least 48 hours before your procedure

Your surgeon will provide you with more detailed instructions to follow prior to your procedure.

What to Expect During Your Chin Liposuction Procedure

Arriving at BASC, Our Licensed and Accredited Surgery Center

On the day of your procedure, you will come to Brookstone Ambulatory Surgery Center (BASC), our state-licensed and AAAASF-accredited surgical center, which is attached to our main building. When you arrive, we will take you to a comfortable private room.

What Type of Anesthesia Is Used?

You will be given local anesthesia or IV sedation to ensure you are comfortable and pain-free throughout the procedure.

Chin Liposuction Technique

At the start of your liposuction operation, your plastic surgeon will make a small incision under your chin and insert a very thin tube (similar to a hollow needle) called a cannula. Another incision behind each earlobe may also be used if needed. The fat cells in the area will be broken up and suctioned out, and the incision will be closed with sutures.

Depending on your unique needs, your surgeon may use laser-assisted or ultrasound-assisted liposuction techniques for more gentle and efficient fat removal, which can provide enhanced results and reduced recovery time.

How Long Does Chin Liposuction Take?

The entire chin liposuction procedure usually takes about an hour, and most patients are able to return home the same day.

What to Expect During Chin Liposuction Recovery

Like with all surgical procedures, adequate recovery is a vital aspect of chin liposuction. Here’s what you can expect as you heal from the procedure.

Immediately After Surgery

After chin liposuction, you will likely experience some discomfort and swelling. Your doctor will prescribe pain medication if needed to manage any discomfort. You will be advised to wear a compression garment around your chin and neck to help reduce swelling and promote healing. You will need to keep the garment on for one to two weeks following your procedure, taking it off only as necessary to shower after the first 24 hours of continuous wear.

First Week

During the first week of recovery, you should rest as much as possible and avoid strenuous activities. You should not engage in any physical activities that require lifting or bending. You will need to keep your head elevated at all times, even while sleeping, to help reduce swelling and promote healing.

Second and Third Weeks

During the second week after chin liposuction, you will likely be able to return to work and resume light activities. However, you should still avoid strenuous activities and heavy lifting through week three. You will be able to stop wearing your compression garment at some point in this timeframe at the discretion of your plastic surgeon.

Fourth Week

By the fourth week of recovery, you can resume all normal activities, including exercise and sports. However, you should still be cautious and listen to your body. If you experience any discomfort or swelling after exercising, rest and take it easy for a few days.

Chin Liposuction Results

Chin liposuction can significantly reduce the fullness in your chin and neck area, resulting in a slimmer, stronger jawline and the absence of a double chin. Results can be seen immediately after the procedure, with continued improvement over the following weeks as swelling subsides.

The final results of chin liposuction are typically visible three to six months after the procedure once you are fully healed and all residual swelling resolves.

Permanent Fat Removal and Maintaining Your Results

The fat cells removed with chin liposuction will be permanently gone from your body and cannot return. However, the remaining fat cells beneath your chin can grow in size with weight gain, so a healthy lifestyle is essential to maintaining good results after chin liposuction.

Will I Have Scars After Chin Liposuction?

The incision beneath the chin for this procedure is typically a short, two mm linear incision that results in a scar that is barely visible. While you may be able to see it right after your procedure, the scar will become less and less noticeable over the next year as it heals. The location of this scar also makes it unlikely that people will see it in most positions. If you have additional incisions behind your earlobes, they will be concealed within the creases.
