Nose Surgery

Have you ever thought about how your nose could look different or perhaps function better? An injury may have left your nose looking crooked or otherwise misshapen, or you may be displeased with the size or projection of the nose you were born with. A deviated septum or other nasal obstruction may impair your breathing through your nose and cause bothersome irritation or snoring.

Nose surgery could be the answer to your problems. This procedure is designed to reshape and refine your nose, addressing structural issues that affect the nose’s appearance and/or function.

What Is Nose Surgery?

Nose surgery, also known as rhinoplasty, is a plastic surgery procedure designed to improve the size, shape, projection and/or function of the nose.

There are two main types of nose surgery: cosmetic and functional.

  • Cosmetic rhinoplasty focuses on improving the appearance of the nose.
  • Functional rhinoplasty addresses structural abnormalities that impair normal breathing.

Depending on your needs, you can undergo rhinoplasty to address both cosmetic and functional issues in the same surgery.

What Can Nose Surgery Treat?

Nose surgery can treat a variety of issues, including:

  • Humps, bumps and depressions in the nasal bridge
  • A wide or narrow nasal bridge
  • An upturned or drooping nasal tip
  • A pointed or rounded nasal tip
  • Large or wide nostrils
  • An overall large or small nose
  • A crooked nose
  • A deviated septum
  • Enlarged nasal turbinates

Who Are Good Candidates for Rhinoplasty?

Good candidates for nose surgery are those who:

  • Have a fully developed nose (typically over the age of 16)
  • Are in good overall health, without any serious medical conditions that might complicate their rhinoplasty recovery
  • Have a specific concern related to the appearance or function of their nose
  • Have realistic expectations about the outcome rhinoplasty can provide

At your consultation at Chattahoochee Plastic Surgery, you’ll discuss your goals, concerns and medical history with one of our board-certified plastic surgeons to determine if nose surgery is the right option for you. Schedule your appointment to learn more and see if you’re an ideal candidate for rhinoplasty.

How to Prepare for Nose Surgery

To prepare for nose surgery, follow these steps:

  1. Stop smoking at least six weeks before surgery, as nicotine can interfere with the healing process.
  2. Do not take aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs or certain herbal supplements for at least two weeks before surgery, as they may increase the risk of bleeding.
  3. Arrange for transportation and post-operative care, as you’ll be unable to drive or perform certain activities immediately after surgery.

Rhinoplasty Incisions: Open Vs. Closed Rhinoplasty

There are two main surgical approaches to nose surgery: open rhinoplasty and closed rhinoplasty. The decision to use open or closed rhinoplasty depends on your unique needs and the complexity of your case. Your plastic surgeon will recommend the most appropriate approach based on your goals and the specific alterations required for your procedure.

Open Rhinoplasty

Open rhinoplasty is a technique where the surgeon makes an incision on the columella, which is the small strip of skin between the nostrils. This approach allows the surgeon to lift the skin and soft tissues off the underlying nasal structures, providing greater visibility and access to the bones and cartilage, which is often needed for complex cases and revision rhinoplasty. This technique may result in a slightly longer recovery time compared to closed rhinoplasty, and it causes a small, barely noticeable scar on the columella.

Closed Rhinoplasty

Closed rhinoplasty, also known as endonasal rhinoplasty, is performed with all incisions made inside the nostrils. This approach eliminates the need for an external incision, resulting in no visible scarring and a shorter recovery compared to open rhinoplasty. However, closed rhinoplasty offers limited visibility and access to the nasal structures, which may not be suitable for all cases.

What to Expect During Your Nose Surgery Procedure

During your nose surgery, a certified anesthesiologist will administer anesthesia to ensure your comfort. Your plastic surgeon will then make incisions, either inside your nostrils or along the base of your nose, to access the underlying structures. The surgeon will reshape and reposition the bone and cartilage to achieve the desired result.

Once the changes to your nasal structures are complete, the incisions will be closed. Your nose will be bandaged, and a splint may be placed on your nose to support the new structure.

What to Expect During Nose Surgery Recovery

During your recovery from nose surgery, you may experience the following:

  • Downtime: Expect to take at least one to two weeks off from work or school to recover.
  • Limited physical activity: Avoid strenuous exercise for at least three weeks to allow your body time to heal.
  • Swelling: Expect swelling for the first few weeks that may prevent you from seeing your initial results. The majority will subside after a few months. However, minor residual swelling can last up to a year.
  • Bruising: Bruising is common and typically fades within one to two weeks.
  • Pain and discomfort: This is typically mild to moderate. Your surgeon may prescribe medication to help manage any discomfort.
  • Follow-up appointments: You’ll need to see your surgeon for regular check-ups to monitor your progress and address any concerns.

Nose Surgery Results

The results of your nose surgery will become apparent as swelling and bruising subside. Most patients notice an improvement in their nasal appearance within a few weeks, but it may take a few months for the final outcome to become visible.

The results of nose surgery are typically long lasting, given that no significant trauma occurs to the nose after the procedure.
