Rhinoplasty Incisions: Open Vs. Closed Rhinoplasty
There are two main surgical approaches to nose surgery: open rhinoplasty and closed rhinoplasty. The decision to use open or closed rhinoplasty depends on your unique needs and the complexity of your case. Your plastic surgeon will recommend the most appropriate approach based on your goals and the specific alterations required for your procedure.
Open Rhinoplasty
Open rhinoplasty is a technique where the surgeon makes an incision on the columella, which is the small strip of skin between the nostrils. This approach allows the surgeon to lift the skin and soft tissues off the underlying nasal structures, providing greater visibility and access to the bones and cartilage, which is often needed for complex cases and revision rhinoplasty. This technique may result in a slightly longer recovery time compared to closed rhinoplasty, and it causes a small, barely noticeable scar on the columella.
Closed Rhinoplasty
Closed rhinoplasty, also known as endonasal rhinoplasty, is performed with all incisions made inside the nostrils. This approach eliminates the need for an external incision, resulting in no visible scarring and a shorter recovery compared to open rhinoplasty. However, closed rhinoplasty offers limited visibility and access to the nasal structures, which may not be suitable for all cases.
